Victoria, with its legislature buildings lit up like the castle from the opening sequence of the Wonderful World of Disney, provides a perfect backdrop for ideas around fantasy and the unreal. PEDESTRIAN COLOUR
May 7 - 31, 2010
Robert Rauschenberg coined the phrase, Pedestrian Colour in the interest of capturing ‘a general no-colour,’ comprised of the populist pageantry of found objects, but also base materials like soot or gold and ‘accidental’ colours, like commercial paint ‘mistints.’ This exhibition seeks to treat Rauschenberg’s term as the starting point for an investigation into broader social implications of such an aesthetic. If conventional aesthetics acknowledge ‘local’ colour, Pedestrian Colour is both rooted in everyday experience, yet ‘anti-local,’ floating in a Limbo of unbaptized babies and nameless sensations. Focussing on younger artist’s whose aspirations have been less firmly minted in the economy of the art world, Pedestrian Colour is the monopoly money of aesthetic territoriality, a currency with its own provenance, earned and spent between inverted commas of art and life.
